Dedicating a few spring days to cleaning out is time well spent and it also helps us uncover things that whisper of the farm's past. Many things can be re-purposed and put to good use again. Others, stand by under layers of dust to tell tales and wait their turn. I love this old truck from the 1940's that belonged to Kevin's Grandfather. It sits quietly in one of the barns, as if observing. Walter Appelget, I wish I would have had the pleasure of meeting you. But you live on in your children and your grandchildren and so in a small way, I have. Now watch us give this farming thing a try!
This weekend was a busy one at the farm. We've been doing a little spring cleaning to make space in the barns so Kevin, Liam and Charlie were hauling trash off first thing Saturday morning. Growing the CSA program that we started means making room on the family's farm for this new chapter in the farm's story. Making room means creating space for new machinery and dedicating an area to organize our tools into a central location. Making room means we can move our cold storage unit to a more convenient location and work to create a new area for rinsing vegetables/preparing shares as well as a new pick-up area for shareholders.

It's Plowing Day! We hooked up the chisel plow to the tractor last weekend to start to get the fields ready for planting. Kevin said this is called "primary tillage" but Primary Tillage Day doesn't quite have the same ring to it. No matter what the official term is we're all excited about the start of the growing season. We are planning to grow our production area to approx. 3.5 acres and are happy to be welcoming many new members this year!

This blog is about our small family farm and homestead located in Central New Jersey. We grow for our own table but we also grow for the tables of our families, friends and neighbors through our Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program. Archives
